Blu-Ray Movies Versus DVD Movies: A
Comparison
Having won the HD movie
format war, beating Toshiba's HD DVD format, the
blu-ray disc is here to stay!
If you are un-decided whether to invest in a blu-ray movie or blu-ray player, it is hoped this article
explaining the differences between blu-ray discs and
standard DVD movies will help you decide.
First, blu-ray discs use Blue Laser technology while DVDs use
Red Laser technology. Blue Laser technology has a much shorter
wavelength than Red Laser technology.
Blu-ray discs are of the same size as DVDs, but with larger
capacity. They can hold an entire movie at HDTV resolution or
the consumer can record 2 hours of HD video content. Blu-ray
discs offer more in all aspects of support, capacity, sound
tracks, and picture quality.
When it comes to movies,
there are two main determinants of the superiority of the
movie: the image and sound quality.
These two components are the factors that determine whether a
movie playback is enjoyed or is considered mundane in today’s
fast technology world.
When we consider the maximum
native resolutions that are supported via HDMI, the DVD
supports EDTV (480p) while blu-ray discs have a whooping HDTV
(720p, 1080i, 1080p).
This means that blu-ray discs offer crystal clear images, twice
clearer than DVDs.
The storage capacity is
another area where the Blu-ray disc is much superior to DVD. A
single layer DVD has a capacity of 4.7GB while a dual layer is
8.5GB.
On the other hand, a single layer blu-ray disc has a capacity
of 25GB, a dual layer has 50GB while a prototype quad layer
offers 100GB.
This major difference in storage space makes the blu-ray disc
superior in recording HD movies as well as when it is utilized
for data storage.
Sound quality is also a
consideration when we want to determine the superiority of a
movie.
Blu-ray offers high-resolution sound and supports uncompressed
linear PCM, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Digital
Plus, DTS-HD High Resolution, Dolby Digital and DTS.
The DVD can only manage Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES.
It is clear that blu-ray discs offer much more diverse and
high-resolution audio that DVD.
The last comparison is on
video capacity that can be accommodated for each dual layer
disc. The video capacity usually varies depending on the
encoding that has been used.
Videos that have been encoded with VC-1 or MPEG-4 give more
compression. DVDs have an SD capacity of approximately 3 hours
while they do not support HD.
Blu-ray discs offer approximately 23 hours of SD and between
5.6-8.5 hours on HD depending the encoding method that has been
used.
